The Entrepreneur and a Healthy Lifestyle: How to make it work
By Jenn Clark
As you enter the phenomenon of entrepreneurship, fitting in tasks that do not seemingly advance your career or involve spending time with loved ones appears almost impossible. Between all the new skills you are continuously learning, meetings you are attending and family functions approaching, your calendar does not have room for much else, especially (insert horror movie music here) exercise.
But, working out is great for clearing the mind. However, the secret is to not look at it as another job; look at it as a stress reliever.
The increased energy your body rewards you with after some physical activity pairs well with some healthy eating. This can also seem like a chore, though, if you are unsure where to start and think that all healthy meals involve weekly prepping.
It is, in fact, possible to live an optimal lifestyle while pursuing self-employment, and the Planful team often focuses on living well as they take on more clients and juggle more assignments.
How do we do it?
We limit the number of times we go out to eat in a month and use that money for quality, fresh and, as much as we can, organic food in the grocery store instead. We find that we also save money by doing this (win-win). As we simultaneously try new recipes, we learn more about cooking in the process (another win-win).
Sarah periodically incorporates physical activity Monday evenings through a gymnastics class and also through exercising a couple times a week with a friend. Jenn discovered that if she does not work out in the morning, she is less likely to do her routine at all. She dedicates two days a week to running and two days to strength training, often throwing in a few miles a week of hiking, especially in the warmer months.
Start out with activities you enjoy and turn them into a regular exercise routine whether it is yoga, aerobics classes or strength training and running. Ask a friend to join you so that you can use that time to also catch up and bond while being healthy together. A support system will be really important as you begin to incorporate these positive habits into your lifestyle.
And never be afraid to consult with a personal trainer. They typically offer the first consultation at no charge that can be used to discuss all your concerns with fitness, tips and even utilizing a trial workout so that you can get a feel of what exercises suit your goals.
We actually asked a certified personal trainer what advice he would give to someone looking to find time for a healthy lifestyle. Here is a summary of what he had to say:
“Create a schedule that designates time for work, physical activity, and rest and relaxation.” – Ryan Cook, ACSM
Everything, in the beginning, seems impossible. Just think about how inconceivable starting your own business was when you began. The key is to want it; you must want it in order for it to happen.
We challenge you this week to use these steps to include a proper diet and fitness plan into your schedule. Follow up with us later this week on your efforts.
Were you able to do it? What do you do currently to keep your body in mint condition while making your dreams a reality?
